Italy is known for Sicily, Sardinia and the luxurious Capri, but what about the country's more obscure isles? After hearing today that a New Zealand businessman snapped up a slice of Italian paradise after paying €2.94m for Budelli island, The Local decided to take a look at some of Italy's other gems.

PONZA is the largest island in the Pontine archipelago and lies between Rome and Naples. It has been raided by everyone from the Etruscans to the Turks and is a popular weekend retreat for boating enthusiasts and beachlovers. The best way to appreciate the island is to encircle it by boat and take a dip in the crystal clear water before tucking into some fresh seafood for lunch.
