Born into poverty in Palermo in 1862, Vito Cascioferro also operated in the US for several years. He is thought to have masterminded the murder of New York City police officer Joe Petrosino in 1909, but was never convicted. Cascioferro never went to school and was instead taught to read and write by his wife, a teacher called Brigida Giaccone. He was jailed in 1930, where he remained until his death. The exact year of his death is unknown.
